Make Money With Adsense Writing Articles

Making money with Adsense is all the rage now. And there are so many different ways to make money from Adsense But no matter what type of website you have, you must be displaying the Google ads, getting traffic and traffic that clicks on your ads to make any money.

flecktarn pants

So to help you along your way, here is a method you've probably not tried and most people probably won't as it does take effort and time. This will make it easier for you to be successful with it.

FLECK

You see, most people seem to want to keep switching from automatic software generators to bombs to portal sites to directory listing sites, which is fine, but the best way is to stick to creating unique content that's informative and of high quality.

This method is not the only way to make money with Adsense, jeez there are probably hundreds and hundreds and lots that we all have not even thought of yet. But as I said before I really feel that this is the best method for long term success, simply because it's been working well in different ways since I began Internet marketing a while ago.

What you need to do is create a site that has thousands and thousands of pages of content on all sorts of subjects and then you get your traffic for free via organic search engine searches, which is all well and good if you want to wait awhile, but this article is all about making money quickly.

Every page on your site should have an adsense box on it and that is how you will make your money.

Now, trying to write thousands of pages of content yourself before making any money would be difficult, you'd lose interest very very quickly and even if you tried to buy that much content would be lunacy.

Plus to build a publish a website with that much content would alert the search engines who would think you are spamming them.

I've always preferred to make money constantly even if the project is only half done or in progress. I find it gives me incentive to keep going.

So this is how you need to approach it.

1. Register a catchy domain name, something like fiveminuteguides.com or learnitnow.com

2. Start writing little 500 to 750 word action plans or checklist on all sorts of topics such as your favorite hobbies and other interesting topics.

3. Publish your website with your articles and remember to add your Adsense boxes, one in the middle and one of the right hand side.

4. So you've published your site up, you have a page up on a certain topic that had a fairly high search rate and Adsense payout rate, now what? How do you make money with this page.

Write articles! For every one fly fishing type checklist write 10 to 20 articles on all sorts of subjects to do with your topic.

But how do you get people from reading your article to going to your website?

Well, not only would you mention your site within your article, (slip it in humbly) you also have your article byline you can use for that purpose.

For example

"For a complete checklist for your first fly fishing trip visit blah.com"

or

"For a complete step by step checklist for catching large Trout visit blah.com"

So not only will you make money instantly from your website, you will also build tons of quality content over time and you will have hundreds maybe even thousands of articles all over the Internet working for you around the clock and your site will do a heck of a lot better in the search engines due to all the incoming links!

This is a very rough outline, but you smart people out there will be able to run with it and add new ideas I haven't even thought of. This is one of those money machines that will make you money on demand pretty much for the life of the Internet.

Water Softener - The 3 Biggest Problems of Using a Water Softener

A water softener is used to help eliminate ions such as calcium and magnesium found in tap water. These ions are beneficial to the body, but they can cause several household problems. Sediments often lead to formation of lime deposits that can clog pipes and shorten the life span of washing machines. Water filtration is often used to help go about this problem.

water softener cleaner

A good water filtration system functions by effectively producing filtered water that does not cause any buildup which can damage installed pipes and washing machines. Water filtration often occurs through the application of a reverse osmosis system. The system system applies pressure in a chamber that is enclosed with a membrane that allows pure water to go through while holding in larger molecules of calcium and magnesium ions.

WATER SOFTENER

As beneficial as water softening systems are to your pipes and washing machines, there are some problems that you may have to encounter. We will discuss these types of problems as we go along, and suggest some common and simple solutions that you can apply to help go around each issue.

WATER SOFTENER PROBLEM #1: SALINITY

Water softening often involves the use of salt. It is used to help attain osmotic pressure in water filtration systems that operate through the action of reverse osmosis. Salt often goes with the filtered water that is produced in the water softener. This can create complications if you are in a salt restriction diet, suffering from heart conditions or hypertension.

One way around this is using two pipes: one that leads to the water softener, the other one leading straight to another faucet. This way, the water that goes through the bypass pipe will not contain sodium. This unfiltered water can be safely used for drinking and cooking without causing sodium imbalance in your body. If you or other members of the family have salt issues, it would be better not to install a whole house water filtration system so that you have the ability to choose the type of water you would want to use for a specific purpose.

Another solution is to use potassium chloride to replace the salt used in the system. Although the compound is as effective as sodium chloride, it is quite expensive in comparison. It is still a form of salt, but the effects would be minimal.

WATER SOFTENER PROBLEM #2: INEFFECTIVE FILTRATION

Some occasionally find out that their water softener is not working properly. Bad water filtration can result from several issues. Before you call a professional, take some time to check your system to prevent unnecessary spending of money. One thing you should check is the tank. See if it has deposits that needs flushing. Also, check the salinity of your brine. Proper salt balance in a water softener is required in order for your filtration to be done properly. Different manufacturers require different salinity, which they often specify in the instructions manual. One last thing to check would be the regeneration frequency of your filter. There may be a need to increase the rate of regeneration in order for the water to be filtered effectively.

WATER SOFTENER PROBLEM #3: LOW BRINE FLOW

Brine flow is also a common issue with water filtration systems. If the brine flow of your system is unnatural, check several things before calling the manufacturer. First, flush out the brine line. Salt deposits may be clogging the line, impeding brine flow. Inspect the filter screen as well as the injector system for any problems and damages, and then replace them if necessary. Did you look at the pressure gauge for the brine line? Your water filtration system has a specific pressure that it needs to maintain for the brine to flow freely. You may have to check the manual as different companies have different pressure requirements.

Troubleshooting water softener problems is easy and can be done without having to contact a professional. Doing it manually is your best friend for maintaining your system. Although we may have given you solutions to your main problems, we still have to tackle those questions you want to ask regarding water filters. Understanding all the ins and outs of a water filter is essential if you are considering an investment in a water softener.

Picking The Best Water Softeners Based On Water Usage And Hardness Levels

Using the best water softeners can prevent expensive household problems such as clogged pipes and plumbing fixtures, dry skin and hair, stiff laundry, and cloudy glassware. These machines can make home appliances like shower heaters and coffee makers last longer and work more efficiently. They can also prevent ugly orange or brown residue from staining your bath tubs, sink and bathroom tiles.

water softener cleaner

All these problems are caused by too much calcium, iron and magnesium in your water. The ions in these elements cause water to become hard. To be able to select the best solution to eliminate hard water, you have to find out the hardness level of your household water. You can do this by calling in a water treatment company or testing your water yourself with a hard water test kit found at hardware stores.

WATER SOFTENER

Getting the right size is also an important factor in picking the best water softeners. The size of your water treatment system is determined by the amount of softening sodium beads you will need to effectively eliminate hard ions. This is calculated by balancing the level of your hard water number to the amount of sodium beads you need to swap the hard and soft ions.

It can be confusing to calculate the exact amount of softening ions you need but to cut the long story short, an average household consisting of 4 people will need about 32,000 grains of water softener. This is based on a water hardness level of 10 grains which is the average water hardness number in developed countries. Be aware though that the level of hard water may differ in various locations and water sources.

The best water softeners for specific households are also determined by personal habits of the home owners. So, one softening system may not be best for all types of people. Some people are better off getting an automatic recharging unit that recharges ions by time or by using a meter. This is convenient if you do not want to keep recharging the machine yourself. Other people with varying degrees of water usage are better off using a manual recharging softener.

Another factor that determines which softener is best is dictated by health issues. The most common and affordable type of softening system uses sodium to remove hard water. But sodium contains salt which can be bad for people with high blood pressure, a history of stroke, heart or kidney disease. For people with salt restricted diets the best water softeners would be potassium based softening systems.

Before purchasing a softening system for your home, it would be wise to consult with a professional water treatment company. This way, you won't risk buying the wrong kind of softener. The pros can gauge what types of softeners are best for each household based on an accurate hard water test and water usage habits of the home owners.

Bass Fishing in Hot Weather and at Night

As most of you have realized by now, summer is here. With temperatures pushing the one hundred degree mark this week; it's getting a lot more difficult to stay out on the water past noon. The fish go deep, and the jet-skiers, wake-boarders and pleasure boaters are all over the lake. To beat the heat this summer and get in on some great bass fishing, try getting out on the water at night.

fleck water softener

Before heading out to night fish, make sure that you know the area that you are going to fish. Most lakes have structures just below the surface such as stumps, metal pipes from old boat docks and rocks that can be very dangerous while boating at night. Knowing the lake and where these hazards are at the current water level will save you on costly repairs to your boat and possibly your life. Safety first, make sure all running lights are working on your boat and that you have good flashlight or head lamp on board before heading out.

FLECK WATER

Research has shown that bass move into shallow water to feed at night; especially in the warmer months of the year. During the summer daylight hours, most bass seek deep water refuge from the sun and extreme heat, making them more difficult to catch. At night, they feel more secure and tend to roam shallow flats looking for food making them an easier target for bass fishermen.

To gear up for a night trip make sure that you have plenty of lures with a dark color. Black, purple, or blue fleck are great colors to start with. Most bass feed while looking up and can see a dark silhouette at night better than they can a lighter tint. Lures range from slow moving jigs and Texas rigged worms to fast moving spinner-baits and crank-baits. The key is to make sure that you use a bulky lure that moves a lot of water so that the bass can find it easier in the dark. Some of the best night time lures include a 10 inch Berkley power worm and a ½ ounce spinner-bait with a big Colorado blade. You may also want to add a rattle to your lure as another attraction. If your lake has an abundance of aquatic grass such as hydrilla or milfoil, a slow running, black buzz-bait will produce some startling strikes.

The best areas on a lake to night fish are those that have a lot of shallow brush or rocks next to deeper water. This includes the rip-rap along dams and bridges as well as boat docks. Other key areas are banks that are well lit such as those in a marina or boat docks that have a security light that remains on all night. Bass will position themselves in the shadows of these lights waiting for a shad, perch or crawfish to swim by. If you are night fishing during a full moon, fish the banks that have moon-light shining on them. Target the shadows that the moon-light makes on the bank behind trees, rocks or brush.

Night-time bass fishing can provide some of the best action all year long. Make sure that you are well prepared and slow down while boating across the lake. Remember to be cautious and to put safety first and you will have an enjoyable experience.

Dealing With Ceiling Water Stains

You happen to look up one day and there it is, an ominous water stain on your ceiling. Where did it come from and how long has it been there?

softener resin

After you have got over the shock and annoyance of it being there at all these are the things that need to be determined as soon as possible.

SOFTENER

Where the water came from should not be too hard to figure out. Whether it's the roof or an upstairs bathroom, whatever is above the ceiling is usually the place to scope out. If, however, you cannot immediately figure out where the water came from - or is still coming from - you may have a leaky pipe somewhere between the floor above and the ceiling and a plumber should be called in to check.

Once the source of the problem has been determined and dealt with, whether it was an accidentally overflowing sink or a broken old pipe, the actual damage to the ceiling itself has to be fixed. You should be certain that the problem is indeed fixed otherwise any plaster or dry walling work you have done will be worthless.

Simply painting over the stain is rarely ever the best answer and calling in a professional to assess the damage and the best way to repair it is well worth the extra expense, as it can be hard to tell with an untrained naked eye whether the damage done to the ceiling itself is just an ugly stain or if the moisture has actually comprised the structure itself and needs more extensive repairs.

Houses for Dogs, 5 Tips for Noisy-At-Night Dogs

If you've had dogs in your family before, chances are you have had problems with the sleep all day-up all night puppy. I want to list a few tips that might help you get some sleep at night when FIDO wants to play.

flecktarn

Dogs are very similar to children, they respond to stimulus from their environment but with some proactive planning you can help them to sleep at night like you do.

FLECK

1. Normalize their eating and duty times especially towards the end of the day. I like to walk my dogs in late afternoon, then feed them as soon as we get back inside. They get energized again from the food and being inside with you. This is good, everyone can have some fun after a hard day at work. It won't be long before their dinner is digested and they need or just want to go outside again to relieve themselves or just run and play some more. Try to schedule this for shortly before you want to retire. No more food or water after this point, maybe just a very small chewy treat for a reward. Now try to let them relax near you for a little while.

2. Try to reduce stimuli so they get more relaxed. Turn the volume down on everything including your voice. Turn some lights off but not all, darkness tends to put them on alert if it's sudden. If possible limit the visitors you receive and also your own physical activity. Some white-noise can help drowning out the sounds your puppy hears from outside. No vigorous play for an hour before bedtime.

3. Dogs houses are a calming place for them so if possible an indoor house for dogs that would be near you would help greatly. You BOTH can sleep better when you have a designated house that can be his bed...again it helps them relax if they are near you. You can use his pad to show him that he should be in the house or crate. Move it during the day so he knows where to go.

4. More food (protein) in the morning and less at night (carbs), will make him sleepier.

5. More activity during the day actually helps them sleep better at night, again similar to a child, or even us adults.

If you consistently use these tips it shouldn't be long before you have a routine that helps you have a better nights sleep and gives you a great mental outlook when you awaken each morning.

I would love to hear any suggestions for methods that worked for you.

Everyone has a slightly different situation, so sometimes it's hard to pick using only generic information. We'll take a look at the various options in this article, and hopefully you will come away with a better idea of what each thing does.

High Gloss Sealer

FLECK WATER

This product can go straight on an untreated concrete garage floor, but it's probably best used in situations where you want to protect the current treatment. Actually, it can even be used on aggregate, masonry, bricks, pavers, and slate. You will get a great, deep shine, and even better chemical stain protection if you put this over Quikrete garage floor paint. Used on untreated concrete, the protection is not nearly as good as with epoxy garage floor paint, but there will be some gain in resistance against staining and cracking. Considering it's only half the price of epoxy, it is cheaper, and it is also a lot easier to install since it doesn't have to be mixed. This may be the product for you if your only goal is to add some shine and a modicum of protection. If you have further needs, though, you will want to read on.

Etching Stain By Quikrete

First off, stain does not provide any protection. It is only used to give the concrete color. In fact, Quikrete states that their stain must be sealed with their Quikrete Garage Floor Stain Sealer. That being said, stain is pretty neat in that it does give a the concrete a very interesting and unusual color, and this particular product is a one coat affair, making it far simpler to apply than epoxy garage floor paint. Compared to their other garage flooring solutions, Quikrete's stain is pretty pricey, and even after you add the sealant you're not getting as much protection as with epoxy paint. Use this product only if all you want is an old world looking earth-tone color on your concrete. This cannot be used on concrete that already has any other type of treatment on it. Treated concrete will have to be stripped.

Clear Epoxy Coating By Quikrete

Although this product can be used on the garage, it is primarily intended to be used on indoor concrete. However, if you decide to stain the concrete, this is still going to be your best protection, indoor or outdoor. It provides a fairly low gloss look, and decent protection against chemicals and the elements. It's a lot more expensive than the Quikrete garage floor high gloss sealer, though, so unless you have stained your concrete, that will be your better option.

Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

Of all of the different Quikrete garage floor options, this epoxy paint coating is king. Not only will you get professional looking color, but this also provides the best protection by far. The kit is a great deal as well, especially considering it comes with the cleaner and color flakes. Considering price and the quality of the end product, this should probably be the first thing anyone considers unless they have a specific situation that requires different treatment. However, though it is by far the most durable solution, it's also the hardest to install.

Benefits of Installing a Home Water Softener System

If you live in an area that has hard water there are many reasons to add a softening system to your home. When water has a high content of minerals it is considered hard water. Most commonly this means that there will be high amounts of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Water which is free of minerals other than sodium is considered soft water. When a home has a water supply that is hard there are many negative consequences including soap or shampoo that does not lather well, clothes coming out of the laundry looking dingy, bathroom fixtures which are left with chalky rings, clean glasses that will still show spots and water using appliances like coffee makers suffering from shortened lives.

water softener reviews

In some areas chemicals are added to water on a city or district wide basis to soften water before it reaches household pipes. In an area where this is not done it is up to the homeowner to invest in a water softening system. There are a number of different types of waters softeners for home including reverse osmosis, ion exchanging, chemical, magnetic and electric water softening system installations. Some water softeners will increase sodium levels which is not healthy for some people with heart issues. It is therefore important to choose a water softening system that will best work on the particular water hardness in your areas as well as any special needs you might have.

WATER SOFTENER

There are many conflicting claims regarding water hardness and health. Some studies have shown that hard water lead to some cardiovascular illnesses in men. The World Health Organization says that there is no correlation between water hardness and adverse health effects, that these studies had inadequate data.

There is little argument on the positive effects that installing a water softening system will have on washing dishes and doing laundry. Hard water prevents the lathering in soaps and detergents. When water is softened the richer lathers returns, clothes rinse cleaner and the amount of expensive detergents used can be reduced. In dishwasher hard water leaves spotting and residue on glasses and dishes as they dry. The mineral residue that is found on bathtubs or shower walls also is left behind on skin and hair. When a water softening installation is completed hair will feel softer and skin cleaner that it had previously. There is an ecological benefit to be found in the reduction on water usage that follows a change to softer water as well as the reduction in detergents and soaps.

Appliances that use water such as coffee makers, water heaters or even tea kettles will have much longer life spans after there a water softening system is installed. Scaling which is a deposit of calcium and magnesium is left behind as water is heated in these appliances. Pipes can become clogged with this scaling as well which can cause reduced water flow and eventually may lead to pipes needing to be replaced. While there is an expense that must be paid to install a water softener there is tremendous savings that can be realized by not having to repair or replace these items.

How to Know If a Guy Will Miss You If You Provide Him Space - Here's How to Expertly See the Signs

It is believed that absence makes the heart grow fonder. So does this automatically mean that your guy would miss you if you allow him to have some space? Or would doing so drive him away from you?

He has to feel what it's like to not be with you.

It's so easy for a man to take a woman for granted especially if he's already so used to seeing her around him. Since he believes that you won't leave his side anyway, he would rather go ahead and do other things even when you're there asking to be with him. Go away for a while and he'd surely miss your presence.

Be preoccupied with something other than him.

For this guy to even miss you, he should see that he's not the only source of your happiness. A guy who knows that you have fun outside of your relationship is assured that you won't be nagging him to provide the joy in your life.

Assure him that even without him, everything's still okay.

Show him that even if he's on a sabbatical, that you're fine and you'd still be around when he comes back. And while he's trying to sort things out on his own, you can go ahead and live your life purposefully.

Resist the urge to call.

Since this guy wants to spend some time by himself, then you must learn to respect that. Don't go interrupting his little time off by bothering him with an unexpected phone call. This just proves how much you can't live without him.

Don't demand for anything.

Love and trust should be freely given, you don't require this from anyone, most especially from your man. The more that you tie him down and demand so many things from him, the more that this guy would want to get away from you, it's because a man should be assured of his freedom before he can satisfy you emotionally.

He'll surely be asking his friends about you.

While he's away, this guy would miss all the moments that he has taken for granted when he was with you. And since he can't take the chance of you knowing that he's now terribly missing you, he'll ask his friends to keep an eye on you and to report to him what's you've been doing.

The small reminders of you would make him want to cut short his time off.

When you give him his freedom and he's supposed to be enjoying his time by himself, there would always be reminders that would jog his memory of you. He is sure to look back to that time that you went to Aspen when a fleck of snow falls on his eyelashes - all the smallest things seem to point to you.

What is Hard Water and How Does a Water Softener Eliminate It?

There is a lot of hype surrounding the issue of hard water. A lot of water softener companies seem to purposely make the problem as complicated as possible. Maybe this is so they can charge a lot of money for a complicated solution. Read on to find out the facts about hard water.

water softener salt potassium

In areas like the Rocky mountain states and Florida, hard water problems are a fact of life. People who live in these areas have to contend with many different issues related to hard water. Some of these are relatively minor, like mineral spots and residue on glassware and dishes, or decreased effectiveness of soaps and detergents. Other problems can be pretty significant, such as clogging of plumbing pipes or water heater failures due to scale build up.

WATER SOFTENER

So what exactly is hard water and what causes it?

Well, the simple answer is it is plain old H2O with an excessive amount of dissolved hardness minerals. These hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, are picked up when rain soaks into the ground and passes through limestone. Limestone is a fairly soft type of rock and is dissolved pretty easily. Acid rain caused by carbon dioxide in the air dissolves the limestone even faster and makes the problem worse.

Areas, like Florida, that are thought to have once been under the ocean have a lot of underground limestone. These areas are called "karstic". Karstic locations usually have hardness issues with their groundwater. If you live somewhere like Florida, you probably already know that.

So what do you do about the problem?

There are really two main ways to deal with the problem of water hardness. You can remove the minerals or add something to modify their effect. Detergent companies do this when they add phosphates to cleaning products. The phosphates help overcome the negative effects of the dissolved minerals. One problem with this is the phosphates create other problems when they are discharged into the environment.

The other solution is to remove the minerals form the water, making it "soft". The most common way to do this is with a water softener, using the "ion exchange" method. The ion exchange method works like this. The hard water goes through a tank filled with beads made from a special resin. These beads have a negative electrical charge. The calcium and magnesium molecules, called "ions", have a positive charge. The positive mineral ions are basically stick to the resin beads, so the water leaving the tank is now "soft".

This process continues until all of the beads are "full" of mineral ions. Then the tank is back flushed with a salt solution to clean the beads. This is called "regeneration". After regeneration is complete, the softener is ready to keep doing its job. This cycle repeats itself as needed. From time to time extra salt must be added to replace what has been used in regeneration.

There are certainly other details in the process. In fact, the issue can be made as complicated as you want, but there is really no need. The bottom line is if you live in an area affected by hard water you need to deal with it and a water softener is the most common solution. Now that you have read this you don't have to be intimidated by the hype and hard sell tactics a lot of companies use.

Several years ago I moved into a new home located in a rural area that was not supplied by the nearest municipal water system. My source of fresh water was a drilled well. The water is of very good quality but is very hard water. I really did not fully understand the term "hard water" for several years but I have finally come to grips with issues related to hard water.

water softener salt

I have been using a water conditioning system produced by Culligan since I moved into my home. I thought it was a water softener. Everyone called it a water softener and that is what I called it. I got a little discouraged with the system performance and began considering a change. The Culligan system required the addition of peroxide to operate correctly and I was using nearly 10 gallons per month. My water was still showing some iron and system pressure was falling considerably.

WATER SOFTENER

I began researching water softeners. To my surprise I was not operating a water softener. It was merely a deluxe "water filter". The water was passing through a media bed that filtered the water but it did not soften it. I realized at that point that two completely distinct processes were involved in proper water conditioning.

For optimum water quality the water should be filtered and then it should be "softened". I found that the softening process removed dissolved minerals that a filter allowed to pass through. That accounted for the mineral build-up on my appliances such as electric tea kettle and porcelain fixtures etc. Even system iron is present in different forms. Some iron is actually dissolved in the water and passes through a filter. It will however solidify when it is not circulating. It contributes a very large build-up inside hot water heaters.

I decided on a simple but high quality cartridge filter and a water softener that required salt pellets for constant optimum softening. The salt used by the softener does not actually enter your water supply. I found that it's only purpose was to flush out a special media bed that has special physical qualities that attract the minerals like a magnet. Many people are under the misguided belief that salt goes into your useable water - not so.

The media bed requires flushing at regular intervals to continue working at peak performance. The system will shut down at predetermined times and close itself off from your water supply. It then takes the salted water into the media bed. This will cause the accumulated minerals to release from the media. It is all flushed into your waste water system by a separate plumbing connection. Once this cleaning cycle completes, the system re-opens and sends fresh, conditioned water to your water supply again.

This is the point where I discovered "soft water". I was amazed. After I installed my new filter and conditioner it took about 2 days to fully displace all previous water from the water heater and storage system. Now when I take a bath the difference is absolutely amazing. After several years of "hard water", the water now truly felt soft and slippery. This is soft water. Soap lathers so much better and laundry detergent can be reduced considerably yet with better results.

This was my education regarding water softening and water filtering. There is considerable difference between the two processes. I hope this will help someone still lucky enough to be using fresh underground water.

Effects Of Water Softener Discharge on Septic Systems

There are over 20 million households in the United States currently using on-site septic systems, and that number appears to be growing. We get many questions from our customers as to what effect (if any) water softener discharge has on a these systems. With such a wide range of information and opinions available, we felt that it was appropriate to examine some of the studies on this topic, and try to accurately present an overview of current understanding.

The Septic System and Water Softening Process

WATER SOFTENER

Septic system function is very straightforward. Your homes plumbing is piped into a in-ground storage tank. When wastewater enters this tank, the heavier solids settle to the bottom. Bacteria present in the storage tank digest the solids, breaking it down to a liquid. After this process is complete, relatively clear water is discharged from the primary tank into a second holding tank or distribution box. Water then re-enters the surrounding soil through a drainage field consisting of perforated underground piping.

The water softening process is accomplished by a chemical cation exchange that replaces the calcium and magnesium in your water with a equivalent number of sodium or potassium ions. During the softening process, your household water passes through the resin bed, and the magnesium and calcium contained in the water are removed. A given sized resin bed has a fixed capacity to remove hardness before it needs to be regenerated to full capacity in order to continue to provide softened water (for example, one cubic foot of resin has the ability to remove 32,000 grains of hardness from your water). When the resin bed is nearing exhaustion, the control valve washes the resin bed, and draws salt containing solution from the brine tank through the resin. As the salt contacts the resin bed, the process of ion exchange occurs, and the magnesium and calcium (hardness) that was collected in the bed during operation is washed to drain. After a final rinse to remove the excess salt, the resin bed is again ready to provide softened water.

The concern of discharging water softeners into an on-site septic system arises out of a belief that sodium salts used by water softeners during the regeneration stage - or the increased amount of water entering into the system - may be harmful and possibly cause septic systems to fail. Although there is no scientific data available that supports harmful effects, there have been many investigations into the potential for problems to occur.

The Effect of Sodium Salt on Septic Systems

Common knowledge supports that higher levels of sodium salt can have a direct impact on bacterial life forms. For instance, most bacteria usually found in fresh water ecosystems would be unable to live in a high salinity environment like an ocean. For this reason, concern was generated that septic systems that rely so heavily on bacterial action may be effected by high concentrations of sodium.

These concerns seem to be unwarranted. First, a typical residential sized water softener discharges between 40 and 70 gallons of water per regeneration. Through much of the regeneration process, fresh water is discharged, containing no salt at all, so the total concentration of salt is very dilute. However, during some stages of regeneration, the sodium concentration can reach as high a 5,000 to 10,000 ppm for brief periods of time.

To see if this level of sodium effected microorganisms typically found in aerobic on-site septic systems, a study was performed that exposed these microbes to a worst case scenario of 10,000 ppm brine solution. The study concluded that "there were no statistically significant differences in the metabolic activity of the microbial community", and that it was "unlikely that failures in domestic water treatment system are the result of exposure to the brine from home water softeners." (1)

Other studies indicate that the effect of putting softened water into septic system can actually be beneficial. There is a very low amount of sodium contained in softened water. For every grain of hardness removed, approximately 8 ppm (parts per million) of sodium is added. Although some naturally occurring water sources have very high sodium levels, softened water normally has a slightly elevated sodium level vs. untreated hard water. While this concentration is normally insignificant at typical hardness levels, these higher sodium levels are more in the optimal range for septic system bacterial growth, and can promote bacterial development.(2,7)

The Effect of Increased Water Volume from Water Softeners on Septic Systems
While the volume of water discharged by a water softener during the regeneration process will vary depending on water pressure, pipe diameter, and softener design, water softeners typically use 40 to 70 gallons of water during regeneration. Questions have been raised as to what effect this increased volume of water (hydraulic load) may have on septic system performance. Did the flow rate and volume of water softener entering the system during water softener regeneration adversely effect the normal settling process, and allow solids to enter the drain field?

Investigations by NSF International determined that the additional volume of water due to softener regeneration is not sufficient to cause any harm to septic tank systems. In fact, water softener regeneration flow rate and volume is lower than the typical discharge from an automatic washing machine.(3) Further, old style "time clock" based water softeners regenerated as set on a calendar basis, normally one to two times per week - the newer generation of metered (on demand) water softeners measure household water consumption, and only regenerate as needed - this further reduces the amount of water discharged into the septic system.

The Effect of Water Softener Salt Discharge on Percolation in Septic Drain Fields

There has been some anecdotal evidence that sodium added to septic systems by a water softener may have negative effects on the ability for the drain field soil to percolate properly.

Many studies have been performed to investigate this issue (2,4,6), and seem to indicate that water softener regeneration discharge does not interfere with drain field percolation, but may actually improve percolation in finely textured soils. This may be due to a higher calcium concentration found in softener regeneration discharge. When this "calcium rich" water enters the drain field, it sometimes increased the porosity of the soil (dependent on the type of soil present), improving the percolation process. To further support this finding, gypsum, another calcium rich material, has long been used for this same purpose.

Conclusions and Recommendations

The results of our review are corroborated by a fact sheet published by the Environmental Protection Agency(5), that points out the following:

a) High concentrations of calcium and magnesium in the softener backwash water have no deleterious effect on the biological function occurring in the septic tank and may, in some cases, be helpful.

b) The additional volume of wastewater generated is added slowly to the wastewater stream, and does not cause any hydraulic overload problems.

c) Soil structure in the soil absorption field is positively affected by the calcium and magnesium ions in water softener effluent.

Based on a detailed evaluation of information and studies performed in this area to date, we conclude that water softener regeneration discharge does not negatively impact common on-site aerobic septic systems. Slightly elevated levels of sodium in regeneration discharge do not seem to effect septic system microorganisms, and may indeed benefit the septic process.

Other matters seem to play a much more important role in proper septic tank function. You should always minimize the amount of household cleaners that enter the waste stream. Whenever possible, reduce the use of soap and harsh chemical cleaners, and consider "natural" products containing low levels of phosphates. If you already have a water softener installed, remember that you can reduce the amount of soap use substantially - by as much as 50% to 75% - soap no longer has to work as hard to remove the minerals already removed by a water softener. Avoid using a garbage disposal with an on-site septic, as minimizing these types of organic wastes will reduce the load on the system. And finally, reduce when possible the amount of water flowing into the system from showers, baths, washing machines and dishwashers.

Work in this area is on-going, and a symposium discussing this issue is scheduled for March, 2006 in Chicago. A joint task force has been established between the Water Quality Association (WQA) and the National Onsite Waste Recycling Association (NOWRA) to plan and oversee joint activities and investigate any future findings. Failures of specific on-site septic systems will also be examined by this task force in order to determine the cause.

In conclusion, and after reviewing a range of scientific studies to gain a present-day understanding of this issue, it appears that owners of onsite septic systems can continue to enjoy the benefits that softened water provides, without concerns of system damage.

WATER SOFTENER

Water Softeners

Water softening is probably the most popular of all water treatment technologies. Although there is much mis-conception about how a water softener works, the end result of a proper application is always the same. Water softeners bring most families a much higher quality of household water. Mineral deposits are eliminated. Water spots on shower walls and glassware, gone! Laundry comes out cleaner and softer. No more soap deposits left in the clothing causing itching and rashes. The total overall quality of the water improves, and truly does feel "softer".

softener resin

When is a water softener needed? Just about any time the water comes from a ground water source such as a dug or drilled well. About the only time one can argue against the benefits of water softening is if the water is drawn from a surface supply such as a lake. Even rivers generally pick up mineral content as they flow over the ground and become "hard water".

SOFTENER

Water hardness is measured in grains of hardness per gallon or liter. It can also be measured in PPM with 17.1 ppm per one grain of hardness. Water over 7 grains hard begins to benefit from the effects of water softening. At 10 grains the effects of softening are readily noticeable. At 15 grains of hardness rush out and buy a water softener, you will be pleased you did.

David's believe-it-or-not says the most common complaint I have heard about the effects of soft water are: No 1-the dishes are very slippery when wet (true) and No 2- my hair has gone all pouffy! (true again-the mineral deposits are gone!)

How does a water softener work? Does a water softener leave salt in my water? Let's get this straight once and for all. A water softener works on a system called "ion exchange". For every grain of hardness (calcium/magnesium) your water softener takes out of the water-IT MUST REPLACE IT WITH AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF SALT. Let me repeat this. The softener exchanges the calcium with salt. The calcium is actually a salt as well, so I should properly say that the calcium salts are replaced with sodium salts. If the softener works perfectly, the exchange would be exact but this is not possible. There is always more salt left in the water than the amount of calcium it removed. The ratio of exchange used to be terrible, and still is in some older model systems. But many newer technologies incorporate systems of rinsing that reduce the left over salt in your water to very acceptable standards. The exchange can be measured with a TDS meter which every salesman should carry, or he is not testing your water properly. The increase in TDS from your feed water to your product water will identify how much excessive salt is left behind. An efficient softener leaves less salt behind than in one gallon of water than is found in one piece of white bread.

A water softener should not be installed where a sodium restricted diet is recommended. Although I would suggest that the softener still be installed if the water warrants the application, and a reverse osmosis unit be placed in the kitchen to remove the salt, and all other impurities, for cooking and drinking water. Water softeners will often remove small amounts of iron from your water. But this will increase the salt used, and the salt left behind. Larger amounts of iron, over 1mg/ltr will cause excessive salt use, and eventually foul the bed of the softener. A water softener should not be used as the primary means of reducing iron in water.

Another consideration in softening is your septic system. Water softeners rinse large amounts of salt into your drain water. If you are on a septic system, as many rural systems are, you will damage the cement holding tank and salt will harm vegetation in the area where the septic is located. Potassium Chloride is a suitable replacement under these circumstances, or if you just want to be more environmentally conscious in your water treatment application. Potassium is far less corrosive and does not have as much negative impact on the environment. Potassium is also often recommended as a sodium replacement for people on salt restricted diets. (although my preference where health concerns are an issue, is the application of a reverse osmosis after the softener).

Saltless Water Softeners? RUBBISH! There are no saltless water softeners which have been tested and certified. But lots of them have been tested and discarded as rubbish. The Water Quality Association is an organization which is there to inform and protect the public in regards to the water treatment industry. To my knowledge they have tested many electronic, electric, or magnetic devices and found that none of them remove one grain of hardness from water. Some of these devices will reduce scaling, the effect of mineral deposits sticking to surfaces, but none of them remove anything from the water. Once again, I see this as dealerships and sales people who just want to get the sale, so they give the customer what the customer wants. A magic wand. Well I can supply you with magic wands for .29 so don't pay more than that for any magic wands. I am sure these statements will ruffle some feathers, but until I see the WQA certifying a saltless water softener, I will stick to my statements.

If you install a water softener in your home, and keep it for six months to get used to it, you will not likely ever be without one. I have had mine for 14 years now. Yup, the same one. Make a wise purchase and you will have a long lasting piece of equipment.

I have said many times, " a wise and educated consumer makes wise choices". Your water, your health, your responsibility.

What a Difference a water softener system will make on your new home, life and health!

water softener salt

While moving into our new home, our family purchased a whole house system 6 years ago. We absolutely love it! During our water test/demo we realized that our tap water was HARD, loaded with CHLORAMINE, and was COSTING us money. We were promised through different studies and reports that we would be protecting our investment in our house, while enjoying the benefits to our skin, hair, clothing, and our appetites! Our promises were met! Everything changed after our water softener was installed.

WATER SOFTENER

Our hair and skin changed back to how it were when we lived in Colorado. We realized that our HARD tap water was adding to our DRY SKIN issues and to brittle, DAMAGED HAIR. Not only did we have to reduce our shampoos, hand soaps, detergents, and cleaning agents by 80%, we switched to natural soaps. We never liked natural soaps before but the clean, SOFT water allowed the natural soaps to perform as expected.

We lived in Oceanside for 16 years in HARD tap water and went through 3 dishwashers and a water heater. NOW our dishwasher is clean (not cloggled) and our dishes are always spotless. Our Shower glass doors don't have the hard water streaks/spots, and all our faucets/fixtures look new like the day we moved into the house.

Laundering clothes in hard water is terrible. Colors used to fade after the 3rd wash, hot/warm settings were always used so we could be confident the clothes were clean. NOW we can cold wash the colors and darks and have them smelling cleaner and lasting 3 times longer than before. The water softeners for the whole house systems work great.

I almost forgot...it's really nice to be able to drink from every tap in the house. However, I really prefer the reverse osmosis system we have under our kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. All my tea, coffee, soups, and pastas taste perfect!

The water is by far the best water I have had the privilege of drinking and the best part about it, is that I can do so whenever I please. It is almost second nature to assure myself with a stainless steel bottle to carry the fresh and clean purified drinking water around where ever I go. I would definitely recommend purchasing a water softener as soon as possible for your house.

How to Treat Hard Water

Our previous articles in this series, What is Hard Water and How to Test for Hard Water, gave readers a general background on hard water. Now, let's look at some ways to solve your hard water issues. When it comes to treating hard water, you have two broad options. You can use some form of pre-packaged softener or you can install a mechanical water softening device. Pre-packaged water softeners are chemicals that you pour into your sink water or washing machine water. If used properly, they can help control hardness in most cases. There are some drawbacks to using these products.

softener ball

The first drawback is that these products only soften the water that they are applied to. They cannot be used for showering or bathing. Some water softening products must increase the alkalinity of the water in order to work and this can cause skin irritation or even skin damage to those working with the treated water. Another drawback to using these softening products is that some hard water will require the use of a lot of product in order to get the job done properly. This can be expensive after a while.

SOFTENER

The other option you have for treating hard water is to install mechanical water softening devices. These cost-effective units can be installed permanently into the home's plumbing system. Once installed, they can continuously remove calcium, magnesium and other minerals.

Installed softeners use the ion exchange process to rid the water of mineral content. In simple terms, the untreated water passes through a media bed. This bed is often composed of sulfonated polystyrene beads. These media beads are supersaturated with sodium. As hard water flows through the media, minerals stick to the resin beads. Sodium that is on the resin beads is released into the water. Once the media becomes saturated with mineral content, it must be recharged, and this is done by simply running a salt solution through the media resin. The collected mineral content is sent to waste water for removal.

It has been reported by the Water Quality Association (WQA), that the ion exchange water softening process normally adds sodium to the delivered water at a rate of about 8 mg/liter for every grain of hardness that is removed in each gallon of water. In other words, if the untreated water contains a hardness level of 10 grains per gallon, that same water will contain approximately 80 mg/liter of sodium once it has passed through the system.

For those people who are on a sodium restricted diet, or for those who simply wish to avoid ingesting more sodium, softening devices should be installed so that they only treat hot water, or they can install another faucet to the sink that bypasses the system and use this untreated water for drinking and cooking. Homeowners who wish to install a softening device should first have their water tested for both hardness and iron content. This information will be very helpful when selecting the proper unit for your needs. You should also have some clear idea of how much water you need to soften per day. This will help you decide on the right capacity needed for your home.

Innovation and Creativity - A Pipeline to Your Marketing Success

Innovation has always been a key to business success and creation of wealth. Just take a look at the past, where innovation and creativity were closely linked to new inventions such as Walkmans, I Pods, digital cameras, Hula hoops and, yes, even Pet rocks! Today in the vast arena of business innovation has shifted to a global concept of ad campaigns and marketing strategies. A major stumbling block to marketing in the twenty- first century is "invisible constraints". They can be as small as stomach-turning/churning business meetings that start first thing on a Monday morning to monumental emotional barriers that prevent people from taking those steps to financial success.

fleck 7000

Have you ever spent time around rodeos or horse ranches and seen horses standing perfectly still, as if tied to a hitching post, with the reins simply draped on the ground? This is a fairly direct analogy to the invisible restraint problem found in entrepreneurs who seem to be in the grasp of inaction. When the horses are young and being trained, they are tied with a strong rope from the halter to a ring on the ground imbedded in a concrete footer. The attempts to get free are very frustrating and somewhat uncomfortable to the colt and the colt soon learns that a rope, line or rein leading to the ground spells restraint. As a result of this training, when the colt matures, it never tries to pull on the reins that hang down and touch the ground! So, all the rider has to do, whether he is out on the range or in the rodeo arena, is throw the reins over the horse's head, so that they touch the ground, and the horse will stand there, in one place, until the rider retrieves the reins and then the horse feels the freedom to move. This parallels the business marketing problem of limiting ourselves because of the effects of previous experiences, many of which are of a negative nature, instead of going for what we are capable of achieving. Similar to the horse that is actually tethered, or "reasons" that it is, and really believes it is impossible to be free, humans are also affected by such invisible restraints. These restraints become emotional hangups that prevent them from being creative in their marketing. The problem looks real and genuine, but it is actually an illusion and action can be implemented to overcome this blockage.

FLECK

Determine whether you have any imagined tethers or mental restraints that you seem unable to shake. Then take action to negate them. break away from the invisible ropes and bonds. Do it! Give up your fear. Anything of a negative nature that happens will never be as terrible as what you imagine could happen! Get rid of those mental barriers. Crush those huge constraints. You might even find that they aren't so huge after all. As you destroy them, you will begin to eliminate any physical constraints to your marketing success. You were not created for mediocrity...you were meant to be successful! Remember, if you want to change your life-change your day!

The Benefits of Soft Water - Why You Need a Water Softener

Soft water versus hard water has many benefits. Like clean shiny silverware and glassware. No one like the spotty chalky hard water spots on their silverware, glasses or dishes.

water softener prices

Since shampoos, soaps and detergents do not lather well in hard water, naturally soft water or hard water made soft through a water softener restores the rich lathering cleaning ability and cuts down on the usage and costs of soaps and detergents by 75%. Also, one can return to natural chemical free healthy soaps and laundering agents. The harsh chemicals in todays soaps and detergents were invented to combat hard water and still have some lather. With soft water you will not need these chemical based cleaners.

WATER SOFTENER

Hair and skin feels softer , cleaner and smoother. Detergents easily rinse out of soft water. Tests have been done taking laundry that had gone through a rinse cycle in hard water, taken these "rinsed" clothing out and putting them in clean soapless water, agitating them and watching soap still come out of the clothing. Soft water allows detergents to completely rinse out . Fabrics are also softer without hard minerals become trapped in them. Fabrics last longer and whites stay white without the dingy gray caused by hard water.

Soft water also does not leave chalk or orange rings around bathtubs and sinks. This saves time in house cleaning and embarrassment of having cleaned yet finding it difficult to remove all the hard water deposits. Soft water also preserves the life of all water using appliances such as coffee and ice makers, dishwashers, and clothers washers. Hard water wears appliances out quickly and requires more energy use as appliances do not work as well when they are corroded or clogged with mineral deposits. Savings on fuels costs and on properly working water heaters is another benefit too.

Let's look at average replacement of some of the basic appliance due to hard water corrosions; 0-water heater, faucet set, 0-0 washer/dryer set, and the entire plumbing system 00-00. The first water softeners were invented in 1912 before the advent of the modern washing machine as a basic household appliance that converts hard water into soft water which we all find desirable. It has continued to be a basic household appliance and is so appreciated by its owners that it is rare to see a water softerner sold 2nd hand, usally owners just taken them with them when they move. The benefits of a water softener are more than one would realize initially and usually involve a cost savings that more than pays for the softener in about 4-5 years and most softeners are expected to last at least 10 years, with many lasting much longer.

How Do Softeners Convert Hard Water to Soft?

Water Softeners work to convert hard water into soft water. Hard water has minerals like calcium and magnesium which are positively charged ions. The presence of positive charged ions is what causes calcium and magnesium to dissolve less easily in water. As a result of the high concentration of minerals, water tastes "salty" even though there is no sodium present.

water softener shower head

Water Softeners not only work to remove excessive calcium and magnesium but also to remove iron, lead, radium, copper, and sediment.

WATER SOFTENER

The main principal that softeners operate on is the ion exchange. Water softeners all have a resin tank which contains the ion exchange brine tank and the control head which is the mechanism that determines when the regeneration process is to take place.

In the resin tank are resin beads which contain sites that hold sodium or potassium ions. The positively charged hard water ions are attracted to the beads and exchange themselves with the sodium or potassium ions. The process continues until there are no more sites for the exchange to take place and the resin is considered exhausted and must be "regenerated". During this process, the sodium or potassium brine solution is rinsed throught the resin leaving the calcium/magnesium and other hard water minerals to be bumped off and discarded down the drain.

Many concerned about salt intake in their diet will worry if the sodium exchange in the water softening process will have an ill effect on their health.

The FDA definition for sodium in drinking water is: sodium free=up to 28 mg,very low sodium=28 to 197 mg and low sodium=197-789 mg.

The amount of sodium in water exchanged by a water softener is considered a trace amount and will not be harmful for anyone wishing to limit their sodium intake.

10 grains of hard water ions per gallon will be exchanged to 78 mgl sodium, 15 grains exchanged for 119 mgl sodium and 20 grains for 158 mgl sodium.

Potassium chloride salt subsitute is also widely available but a bit more costly than sodium.

You may have heard the term grain capacity when considering a water softener and wonder exactly what it means and how to calculate it.

Grain capacity = how much hardness the softener will remove before it requires regeneration.

1.0 cubit foot of resin = 30,000 grain capacity

1.5 cubit foot of resin = 45,000 grain capacity

2.0 cubit foot of resin = 60,000 grain capacity

Depending on your family's daily water use and how hard the water is will determine the grain capacity required. It is suggested to purchase a water softener with the grain capacity to allow for regeneration no less than 3 days apart.

Why Water Softeners Need Salt

Many people have water softeners in their homes. Many of you that do don't understand how a softener works. Sure, it allows you to use less detergent in the laundry and your soap lathers much better in the shower, but how does it work?

Hardness in water is actually calcium. Hardness is also a few trace minerals like magnesium and iron, but the majority of this hardness is calcium. Calcium, when dissolved in water forms what's called a cation. That is, it takes on a positive charge.

All this calcium is what makes soap harder to lather, which makes it undesirable in your water for cleaning purposes. Many people who live in areas with very hard water will install a water softener to take out all the hardness.

A water softener is simply a vessel filled with thousands and thousands of little beads called an ion exchange resin. The resin will remove the calcium from the water in a process called ion exchange. This process can remove the calcium in your water only by substituting another element in its place. In this case, the element is sodium.

The salt you add to your softener is actually sodium chloride. When introduced into water, it dissolves into two compounds: A positively charged sodium atom and a negatively charged chloride atom. As the water passes through this resin, the resin takes a calcium ion and gives up a sodium ion.

The end result is a concentration of sodium ions in your water in place of the calcium ions, and sodium ions do not contribute to hardness in your water.

Eventually the resin becomes depleted of all of it's sodium ions so it must be replenished. This is what happens when your softener system goes into backwash. If flushes out all the calcium to drain and replenishes all of the sodium lost to the ion exchange process.

This is why your softener needs salt and why you must keep replacing it.

It's a good method for making nice soft water for cleaning, but remember: The calcium is replaced with sodium on a 1:1 basis. This may mean that you end up with a large amount of sodium in your water which is not good for people with hypertension and heart disease. If you do install a softener, it is in your best interest to have the plumber bypass the lines to your kitchen sink so you can use this water for drinking and cooking without high concentrations of sodium.

Removing Lime Scale With Commercial Water Softeners

You can remove lime scale from your toilets, plumbing fixtures and bathroom floors by using commercial water softeners. If your water is naturally hard, it means that your tap contains a lot of calcium and magnesium which produce lime scale deposits.

water softener systems

These deposits harden and block your pipes, plumbing fixtures and stain everything it touches. Your floors and sinks will develop orange or brown stains. Hard water also damages home appliances that use water like the shower heater and coffee maker.

WATER SOFTENER

Another problem you will experience are cloudy glassware and dishes with white soap spots coming out of your dishwasher. Soap doesn't lather well with hard water and can also produce stiff laundry with white spots where the detergent did not dissolve. Even your skin and hair can be affected by dryness.

You can resolve these problems by getting commercial water softeners for your home or business establishment. Other devices that can also help are reverse osmosis units, putting softening additives in your water and installing a reverse electrodialysis device.

You can soften the water in your home by installing a water softener in your water line before the water enters your household plumbing. Water softening systems use sodium or potassium pellets to absorb hard ions in your water and replacing it with soft ions contained in the sodium beads.

Have your water tested for its hardness level so you can make the proper setting on your softening system. You can test your water yourself or have a professional test it for you. It is important to have the proper settings determined by the harness level for your softening system to work efficiently.

A reverse osmosis unit can also remove lime, calcium and magnesium from your drinking water or household plumbing. This system can also make water fit for human consumption and drinking because it also removes large particles from drinking water. The only downside is that this kind of system can be hooked up to only one faucet.

Distilling your water can also remove lime deposits and involves heating water to a certain degree to make the liquid evaporate and then condense in a separate container. The condensed liquid will be cleaner without anymore minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and the like. This water treatment method can raise your energy bills though because of the heating process.

You can get rid of lime in your toilets bowl and tank to reduce staining by dropping chemicals that neutralize minerals and lime in water. You can find these at the supermarket. The only problem with these chemicals is they only get rid of lime and hard water in your toilet. They are also unsafe for children and pets if ingested.

Electrodialysis is something your municipality can do to soften water for the whole community. It is not something you can install in individual households. Commercial water softeners are still the most convenient and practical method of softening your water at home. They are also more energy-efficient and comprehensive than other devices.

Laundry Advice - Top Tips For Super Soft Clothes - Even in Hard Water Areas!

If you live in a hard water area and have tried to your wash clothes in hard water, you will know what a terrible state they come out of the washing machine in. Do you get dingy or graying clothes? Do you get stiff or harsh feel to fabrics, or how about yellow or gray streaks on white shirts?

water softener

The quality of the water used when washing clothes is an important factor, and one that is frequently overlooked. A high level of minerals in a water supply can cause several laundry problems. Hard water contains high amounts of calcium and magnesium minerals. It's these that wreak havoc when washing clothes, and cause the unsightly stains and streaks on precious items of clothes. Continuous laundering in hard water has been shown to damage fibers and shorten the life of clothes by up to 40 percent.

SOFTENER

It is a fact that hard water does not clean as effectively as soft water (which has low amounts of dissolved minerals) and most of the detergent added to the washing machine actually goes to soften the water instead of cleaning the clothes. As a consequence more detergent must be used with hard water compared to soft water. Using more detergent is not only expensive, it is also a major pollution hazard. As detergents contain phosphates they can cause water pollution when they pass into the water course.

If you have any of the above symptoms on your clothes you may live in a hard water area yourself. But do not worry; there are some easy solutions to combat these symptoms. Take a look at the areas in the US that suffer from hard water!

According to the United States Geological Survey, 89.3% of US homes have hard water. The softest waters occur in parts of the New England, South Atlantic-Gulf, Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii regions. Moderately hard waters are common in many of the rivers of the Tennessee, Great Lakes, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska regions. Hard and very hard waters are found in some of the streams in most of the regions throughout the country. Hardest waters (greater than 1,000 mg/L) are in streams in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Arizona, and southern California. There are many areas where the water is completely unsuitable for washing clothes, and it is a common problem that most people will have to cope with and some time in teir lives.

The Solution for Clean Clothes!

o A water softener or conditioner is the best long term solution to resolving the issue as it will soften the water and remove the hard water minerals that are the main cause of the problem.
o If this is not possible try using water that is as hot as the fabric label recommends. Water that is at a higher temperature will work clean much better than at a lower temperature.
o Add the correct amount of low-foaming phosphate detergent or heavy duty liquid detergent.
o Another top tip is to use a powder or liquid softener that will help the water form a lather and increase the efficiency of cleaning while also causing less damage to the clothes themselves. This ensures clothes coming out of the washer are brighter and cleaner.

Have Hard Water? - Install a Water Softener

Water, long acknowledged as the purest of elements, has become a little scary in the last few decades. Most people don't feel comfortable drinking straight from the tap any longer. One of the most popular solutions for many homes is a water softener. But how do you know how to choose the right water softener?

water softener systems

Step 1 - Test your Water
Your first step should be to figure out just how hard your water is. Water softeners work by removing elements like calcium and magnesium, so you need to know just how much of these elements you're dealing with and how powerful a system you'll need.

WATER SOFTENER

If you've noticed that you have a hard time lathering soap or shampoo, you most likely have hard water. You can purchase a water testing kit and run the test yourself or hire a professional to come by and assess your water.

Step 2 - How much water do you use?
Once you have an idea of the hardness of your water, calculate your household usage in gallons. The average American can use as much as 50 to 80 gallons of water in a single day! Even when considering that some gallons are 'shared' (cooking, laundry), a household of 4 can still use 300 gallons in one day.

Step 3 - How much time do you have?
Lastly, you should consider how much time you have in your schedule to devote to the cleaning, running and maintenance of your water softening system. There is a wide range in usability and automation when it comes to water softeners. If you're a very busy person without much time on your hands, you won't want a unit that needs to be monitored constantly or thoroughly cleaned regularly. You should choose one that fits in well with your schedule and lifestyle.

Step 4 - Choose a water softener!
With all of this information on hand, you'll be ready to start looking at units. If your water has high levels of calcium or magnesium, you'll need to consider larger, more powerful units.

The 'strength' of a water softener is measured in how many 'grains' the unit can remove from a gallon. Calculating how many grains your household needs cleaned is easy: multiply the number of people in your home by the number of gallons they use and then multiply this by the hardness (or amount of grains) calculated by your water test... Using average consumption and the average grain of water in the United States, the calculation for a 3-person household would look like this:

3 people x 100 gallons each x 10 grains = 3000 grains a day

A household with these results would get by well with a smaller, 24,000 to 32,000 grain water softener. Units can run as high as 100,000+ grains for larger households or harder water. It's as easy as that! By following these few simple steps, you'll be on your way to the kind of water you and your family deserve.

Does the Salt Free Water Softener Really Work?

Hard water is a common problem in America. Many people use salt to soften their water. But unfortunately the water can end up having a slimy feeling to it. Also people are now becoming concerned because those that have high blood pressure or hypertension may not want that extra salt added to the water they drink and shower in. Another concern is the discarded salt water can have an impact on the environment as it collects in the soil. But is the best solution the salt free water softener and does it work?

water softener

Well first off, the salt free water softener isn't actually a softener at all. Adding salt to the water and causing an ionic exchange softens the water. The salt free method is actually conditioning the water or is known as a descaler. It uses a resin-plated ceramic surface to turn the calcium and magnesium into a crystalline form that sticks to the ceramic surface until it is too large and breaks off into the water. It causes a chain reaction as it flows down the water, attaching to other calcium and magnesium particles and is unable to attach to anything else, including your water pipes. These clumps of calcium or magnesium are discarded with the flow of the water and your pH is not affected.

WATER SOFTENER

Based on the reviews for some of the salt free water softener models like Pelican and NuvoH2O, it is really hard to determine if they indeed work or not. The reviews are very mixed. Either 1 star or 5 stars, not much in between. And I can't verify who's writing the reviews, it's possible they can be written by the companies to promote their products.

But all I can say is that a salt free water softener is a substantial purchase, as much as 00 for a full set up, and it's important to get your water tested. The salt free water softener is not recommended for hardness levels above 75 grains per gallon. A copper level at.5 ppm or more will void a Pelican warranty. A NuvoH2O warranty is only 90 days. The popular NaturSoft system by Pelican has a 10 year warranty and a 90 day satisfaction guarantee.

If you have all of your facts going in and know what you're dealing with warranty wise, it will make it easier to get your money back if it doesn't deliver everything it promises to.
